Ganghwa Peace Observatory
Where history meets the horizon
Located just beyond the Civilian Passage Restriction Line in Cheolsan-ri, Ganghwa Peace Observatory offers an exceptional opportunity to glimpse into North Korea’s natural and cultural landscape. Once closed to the public, the observatory opened in 2008 and has since become a symbol of peace, reflection, and hope.
Visitors can explore exhibitions on the Korean War, inter-Korean relations, and unification policy, while enjoying panoramic views of the Yesung River, Kaesong Industrial Complex, and daily life beyond the border. A high-powered telescope ensures clear visibility-even on cloudy days.
Whether you're drawn by history, scenery, or curiosity, this unique destination combines education, security, and inspiration in one unforgettable experience.
Jeondeungsa Temple, Ganghwa
Where ancient history and spiritual serenity meet
Jeondeungsa Temple, located on Ganghwa Island, dates back to the 4th century during the reign of King Sosurim of the Goguryeo dynasty. Despite damage from fires recorded in 1580 and again in 1614, the temple was reconstructed in 1621 under King Gwanghaegun, and later expanded in 1855 during King Cheoljong’s reign.
Built in the traditional Dapo-style architecture, Jeondeungsa features three rooms across the front and three along the side, supported by stone foundation pillars. As one of Korea’s oldest and most revered temples, it offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore centuries of Buddhist heritage in a peaceful, forested setting.
Geumpung Makgeolli Brewery
Tradition brewed for the future
Founded in 1931, Geumpung Brewery has been crafting makgeolli-Korea’s traditional unrefined rice wine-for three generations. While its rich history and family legacy are compelling, what truly sets it apart today are its engaging, hands-on programs that appeal to modern travelers. Visitors can not only taste authentic, time-honored brews, but also experience the cultural heritage behind one of Korea’s most beloved drinks.
Ganghwa Anglican Church (Hanok-style Church)
Where East meets West in sacred harmony
Consecrated in 1900 by Bishop Charles John Corfe as St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Ganghwa Anglican Church is Korea’s oldest Anglican church building. While it has undergone several restorations, the architectural integrity of the original structure remains intact.
This unique two-story, rectangular building blends traditional Korean hanok style on the exterior with a Western basilica-style interior, symbolizing the harmony between Korean heritage and Anglican tradition. Originally designated Gyeonggi-do Tangible Cultural Property No. 154, the church later became part of Incheon’s registry and was ultimately designated Korea’s Historic Site No. 424 in January 2001.
Today, it stands as a profound symbol of cultural convergence and spiritual legacy.
